Françoise Mouly

Françoise Mouly (née le 15 février 1955, à Paris) est une artiste et éditrice française, fondatrice du magazine graphique américain RAW et éditrice artistique du magazine culturel étatsunien The New Yorker depuis 1993.

Elle a fait des études d’architecture aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, qu’elle a suspendues, débarquant aux États-Unis le 2 septembre 1974, pour une année sabbatique de voyage dans le pays. Après un passage au YMCA et à l’Armée du Salut, elle emménage dans le loft qu’elle occupe toujours aujourd’hui et vit de différents petits boulots : vendeuse de cigarettes dans un kiosque, réalisatrice de maquettes d’architecture dans une agence japonaise, actrice non-professionnelle dans une pièce de Richard Foreman (« Pandering to the Masses »).

Par son intermédiaire, elle s’intègre à une petite communauté d’artistes locaux, principalement des cinéastes. Elle a connu Art Spiegelman à travers la lecture de Arcade, un magazine qu’il co-publiait. Elle a travaillé aussi comme peintre en bâtiment. En 1976, elle retourne à Paris, avant de revenir aux États-Unis et d’être confrontée à des problèmes avec les services d’immigration, résolus grâce à son mariage.

En 1977, elle est coloriste free-lance pour Marvel Comics ; elle suit une formation d’imprimeur dans un cours de formation professionnelle Elle est mariée à Art Spiegelman depuis 1977, l’auteur américain de Maus. Elle a dû se convertir au judaïsme pour satisfaire Vladek, père de celui-ci.

Elle habite dans le centre de Manhattan, New York, avec Spiegelman et leurs deux enfants, Nadja et Dashiell.

Carrière :

De 1977 à 1991 où elle l’a revendu, elle a publié et édité le Streets of Soho and Tribeca Map and Guide, un guide financé par des insertions publicitaires.

Elle a créé sa maison d’édition Raw Books & Graphics en 1978 et a commencé à publier des objets graphiques divers à la fin de cette année, avec sa presse multilith. Pour prolonger et approfondir cette activité graphique, elle fonde avec Art Spiegelman le magazine RAW, qu’ils co-dirigent et publient de 1980 à 1991.

Françoise  Mouly est apparue en 1988, dans le documentaire Comic Book Confidential.

En 2000, elle a créé Raw Junior division, qui a publié Little Lit, compilations de comics pour enfants et en avril 2008, Toon Books, des comics cartonnés pour enfants (le premier étant Benny and Penny de Geoffrey Hayes). En 2000, elle a dirigé un livre compilant des couvertures du New Yorker, à l’occasion du soixante-quinzième anniversaire de cette publication;

en 2005, elle a été commissaire df’une exposition sur ce sujet au Norman Rockwell Museum de Stockbridge, Massachusetts. En 2007, elle a été co-commissaire avec Dodie Kazenjian d’une exposition de dessins et peintures sur le thème de Hansel et Gretel, à la Gallery Met du Lincoln Center.

Françoise Mouly joined The New Yorker as art editor in April,1993. She founded Raw Books & Graphics in 1977 and for fifteen years published artists’ monographs and the annual “Streets of Soho and Tribeca Map & Guide.” Ms. Mouly was the founder, publisher, designer, and co-editor along with her husband, cartoonist Art Spiegelman, of the pioneering avant-garde comics anthology “RAW,” which launched in 1980. RAW first brought acclaim to artists such as Charles Burns, Sue Coe, Gary Panter, Chris Ware, Lorenzo Mattotti, Joost Swarte, Xavier Mariscal, and many others. It is also the magazine where “Maus,” Mr. Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comic book on the Holocaust, was first published.

From 1987 to 1995, Ms. Mouly edited and designed books for Pantheon and Penguin Books. Responsible for about 800 covers over her past sixteen years at The New Yorker, Ms. Mouly has in addition lectured on and written extensively about New Yorker covers.

In 2000, she published “Covering The New Yorker: Cutting-Edge Covers from a Literary Institution.” Ms. Mouly guest-curated exhibits at the Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna in Rome, at the Wilhelm-Busch Museum in Hanover, as well as curating The Art of The New Yorker: Eighty Years in the Vanguard, at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Ma in 2005.

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) chose two of Ms. Mouly’s covers as among the “top 40 most highly recognized, memorable, influential, compelling and iconic magazine covers of the past forty years. “ For the three years since the award was instituted, Ms. Mouly’s work received the honor of being ASME’s “best cover of the year.” In 2000,

Ms. Mouly launched a RAW Junior division, publishing books of comics for kids by star writers, children’s book artists and cartoonists such as Maurice Sendak, Paul Auster, Ian Falconer, David Sedaris, Jules Feiffer, Lemony Snicket, Gahan Wilson, and Neil Gaiman. The LITTLE LIT books have been New York Times bestsellers, and a paperback anthology, BIG FAT LITTLE LIT, was published in 2006.

In the spring of 2008, Ms. Mouly launched TOON Books, her own imprint of hardcover comics for emerging readers, which received universal praise for their innovative approach. In the first year of the new publishing house, every one of the six TOON Books garnered an unprecedented amount of awards and honors, including Stinky by Eleanor Davis being chosen as an Honor book to the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award by the American Association of Librarians (see www.TOON-Books.com for other awards.)

Born in Paris, Françoise Mouly studied architecture at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts, and moved to New York in 1974.

In 2001, Ms. Mouly was named chevalier in the order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.
